Horizon is an awareness program for Constellation, the next wave of space exploration. Created by NASA (by nasa I mean me) to reach out to science, engineering, mathematics and technology graduate students, the Horizon program revolves around building appeal by showing this market that they will be creating solutions to problems that no one has ever undertaken before.

To execute this, the students form teams, and are each provided a Horizon Lab. The lab contains a large array of parts that students use to assemble any sort of device or contraption. This pushes students to use their creativity and problem solving to create something new and different, which resembles the type of work they'll be doing on the Constellation program.

The information brochure that comes in the lab is divided up into several pieces, with interlocking tabs. This continues the theme of the assembly of random parts.

The lab also provides the means to test the device they assemble, by way of the DTS (Device Testing and Simulation) software.

Here be a rough rough rough comp for the Circus student brochure / poster / thing / whatever. If you're just checking in on this, story goes like so: I won a poster competition for the school, but also erm, didn't win. The staff figured it would be better to use the design for an actual brochure / survival guide, which, again is pretty nice. The first design is a few pages back, if you want to see.

This assignment for Deathmatch was a weekly one. We had to repackage our favorite DVD movie. Yep, Jurassic Park. It's what made 1993 cool. I made a print on a piece of plexi with a wall of hot glue, then set another sheet on top of it. I filled it with muddy water and sculpted a muddy texture around the outside. When the case moves at all, the water vibrates like the iconic scenes in the movie.

This was a two week deathmatch project. Create stuff for a massage place opening close by. She needed a logo, a free massage mailer, a gift certificate, business cards, a frequent client punch card, and 4 postcards. I changed the name to Alle, which is french for "to go". I felt I was in a completely different place during and after the massage, as if I had traveled somewhere. I used that as a base for some of the designs. The frequent client punch card is now a passport she stamps.

Here are some logos for Deathmatch. (Deathmatch (n) - Class similar a design tournament. Students are given weekly, daily or bi-weekly projects. Reviews and ratings are given from a panel of judges which select a winner and loser. Winners and losers are posted on a sheet in the hallway for people to see. If you lose too much, you fail the class.

Eenteresting news. The Creative Circus poster Barrett and I designed was not chosen as the winner. How.Ev.Er, some people still took notice to the concept and want to push it forward as a brochure for the school. This actually makes me happier, as I'd prefer it be something more, and to have the chance to revisit the design. Woohoo!

For Publications, we had the option of doing layouts for a coffee table book or magazine. I decided to do a black metal band compilation coffee table book. Black metal is a more extreme form of metal music, relying on fast paced tempos, lo fi recording and shrieking vocals to create a nasty wall of sound. To boot, black metal hinges on satanic beliefs, making it a very popular genre with almost no one. I find it favorable, sans satan. Anywho, here be my creation.

This is (obviously) the cover. There is a cross die cut into the front to allow the second image to show through.

Anddd, the second image. This shows a bit of the controversy following the genre. Oh, you silly Norwegians.

This is the overlay to the next picture. The numerals were tabs that you lifted to reveal each wave of bands.

This is an example of each wave division page. The roman numeral would be die cut to allow a cd sampler of each wave to be held behind it.

This quarter we had our first interaction with working with copywriters. We'll just say I learned a lot.
Project 1 - Two Minit Car Wash
Probably the most difficult project so far, but I think I at least pulled a revisit out of it. So, we had to visit a mundane, regular kind of business and do 4 pieces of collateral for it, none of which could be ads. Me und copywriter visited a place called the Two Minit Car Wash. (FYI, there is a animatronic gorilla out in the front of this place.) We decided the direction should be quirky, while also showing off different ways they could promote their speed.
The first piece(s) were posters that would be put on light poles at stop lights. The design makes it appear that the gorilla is holding it, but you can't see him. Because, he's sneaky. The idea was to liken things people might be doing at a stop light to how fast the car wash is. Excuse the copy. It's my doing. But it gets the idea across.

The next idea was for a window cling that had a barcode that could be loaded with currency. This way, a visitor would just have the barcode scanned and go through the wash without having to get out of the car or handle monies.

The banana peel business card. This was moreover for the challenge of creating a working template. It did. I win.

A brochure. The idea is that the cars are pieces of transparency film. When they overlap, it makes a darker orange color, so the car gets cleaner and lighter everytime you learn about a new service. There is a pocket on the inside that holds the prize, one of 3 of the next collateral pieces: Air fresheners!

The air fresheners! The characters are two guys that have worked there since the 70's, and good ol gorilla.

Project 3 - Design Poster
This was a design poster Barrett and I made for the Creative Circus. The dashed lines are perforated, so you can tear out the whole guide and fold it up, or take individual cards. Pay special attention to lucky rule #7. Kinko's, if there was ever a more useless business, it would still be you.

I've got some hunky dory stuff planned for this quarter, beyond my usual classwork. I'll be having my first stab at the CMYK Magazine competition (www.cmykmag.com) by entering the Roots campaign, Eggs!, book covers, and maybe that dragon illustration for good measure. Regarding Roots, I'll probably limit the entry to just the bath products and log. CMYK only allows one photograph per entry, and the bath set stands alone strong on its own, whereas everything else is either vague, or not strong enough by itself.
I also got wind of the Print magazine cover competition, which I see no reason to stab at as well, being that it's free. So, hopefully, I get a lot of murdering done.
Other goofy side projects include Myspace background and icon illustrations for a friend's band, Solar Fever (post rock goodness), a chess set, and a poster for a pig roast me and my roommate / best friend aspire to start.
This fifth quarter had a rough start, but all the gears are turning now. I'm taking Copywriter / Designer teams, Advanced Trademarks, Photoshop 2, and Publications.

A dragon, a wizard, and a tree nook I would love to have.

A random demon. The dismembered arms were going to serve like wing bones, or whatever you call them. Anyway, I'm awesome and left my sketch pad on the top of my car and drove off....

This was the beginning of a poster I was going to try to present to the band Mastodon.

At one point, me and a friend were working on a video game called Nara: The Third Tower. This was a sketch of the lead characters in the game. Goofy.

I got ahold of some of the shots from the student award show. Two bird bonus, as I don't have to take pictures, and these look purty.

The first is a language book series I did for Type 3.

The second book cover is a redesign for Masters of Doom, an autobiography of the makers of the video game, "Doom". You should read it. Also, you can't see it in the picture, but the book is made from two different papers, with the red part being matte and the white glossy.

This is a poster for the Japanese equestrian festival, Soma Nomaoi.

These pieces were for Illustration for Design greeting cards. Once I get my mitts on the actual cards, I'll post them and explain the concept, but for now, this is just the artwork that went inside.

Branding - Roots

For our branding class, we started by putting a spin on a normal product line, company or service. We then spent the rest of the quarter devising deliverables for our company. The concept I came up with is a spa called "Roots", completely enveloped in wooded terrain, isolated from large town and city life. The feel and execution will be rustic and minimalist, with warm and rural accents (closer to camping, rather than a posh resort). Massage practices will continue the rustic theme (hand churned lotions, pine cone scrubs, etc). The target market will be women, ages 35-60, who usually have high responsibility, well paying jobs, and are looking for a temporary disconnect from their current lifestyles. The spa also includes cabins (or yurts), so guests can make a true getaway out of their trip.
The first deliverable is stationary. This was made from heavy water color paper and stained with watered-down acrylic paint. The idea is that these letters cannot be run through printers, so everything will be hand written. The business card is stained balsa wood, with a wood burned logo, and a lazertran transfer on the back for the information.

The next deliverable was the website.

After that, I created a general mailer for people who had expressed interest in the retreat. The concept is an empty jelly jar, simply labelled "Fresh air". The rear of the label reads, "Just in case you've forgotten what it's like." I used the wavy lines in the logo to create a nice pattern for the outside of the box. For the inside, I wanted to portray something fresh and clean, so I painted a blue sky (also acrylic).

The next was a magazine ad. It would be placed in most outdoor or traveling magazines. The idea is that the more you unfold it, the more you learn about the retreat, and the further you get into the woods.

The next deliverable is a journal that all guests would get as an in-room gift. Because the spa acts as a retreat, this would be a good way for guests to write about their time at the retreat, or vent about any stress back in the "real world". The journal is wrapped in real leather, with wood burned logos, and the same watercolor paper used in the stationary.

The final deliverable is a bath product set. It includes a citrus bath salt, mint leaf massage oil, honey butter lotion, and pine cone scrub. All the the products are delivered in a hollowed out tree trunk with wood burned logo. Containers are acrylic stained balsa, with wood burned icons.

Packaging - Eggs! and Pencil Pushers

Packaging included two assignments for the quarter. The first was egg packaging. The objective was to create a container that could hold a dozen eggs. However, the container could only be made of paper, must be a stackable (but not a basic) shape, had to support 16 pounds on top without breaking any of the eggs inside, and had to be dropped from waist height without breaking any. I started by analyzing how an egg could be supported, and the simplest way to go about it. I figured that an egg only breaks if a part of the egg is exposed to excess force or pressure. By using the intersecting cardboard sheets, it put both even pressure all over the egg, and also kept the egg off the sides of the packaging, while those same sheets reinforced the integrity of the outer walls.

Next was to develop a way for the package to be securely closed for transport and storage. For this, I cut off the top layer of cardboard, right above the wavy corrugation, on both the lid and main package. I flattened the corrugation and glued down a piece of chip board to serve as the hinge. For the closing mechanism, I created another hinge, but instead left the top unglued. the free piece could then slip in between the corrugation and the top layer of cardboard. I cut a half circle at the top, so the tab could easily be pulled out.

For the graphics and concept, the packaging would be branded toward kids, for a food line that would promote eating healthy at an early age. This would be something kids would have fun with, and also be very recognizable and different than anything on the shelves currently. I also chose to do packaging for medium, large, and jumbo egg sizes.

Eggs - brought to you by beer.

The second project was to create packaging for a small, utilitarian type of product (napkins, staples, batteries, etc.) The packaging we created could only be made of bristol board, and could not have more than 2 right angles in the design, and could only use glue on two parts of the package. If a cylinder was used, it could only have one flat side. We also had to design the packaging around a picture of a target market we randomly selected. My target was a guy in in a business suit, riding a moped, with his briefcase in the front basket. I figured he worked at an office building, and handled a lot of the grunt work. It made sense to design the packaging in a way that stood out, as his work is probably rather dull. I decided to package pencils, but give the package some kind of function. The result was a pencil shaped container...the top cone is connected to paddles that move the pencils around, until they pop out of the front slot. I also decided to do a continuation of the design, the idea being there could be a different pencil holder for all the types of lead (9h - 9b).
